Hiking to Maka'ophui Crater on the Big Island of Hawaii on June 23rd, 2010. The trail winds through a ravaged landscape from past volcanic flows, passing a small pit crater, a shield volcano (Mauna Ulu), and steam vents. Maka'opuhi Crater is the largest pit crater on Kilauea. It is ~360 ft. deep and 1.6 km by 1 km. The distance of the hike was 8 miles round trip.
