First in a planned series of three cameraless films exploring the history of US film leader standards, as part of my ongoing Lost Leaders project. lostleaders.ca
The text of the SMPTE Universal Leader standard (ASA PH22.55-1966) is painstakingly written out by hand on blank 35mm leader. This technique foregrounds the handwritten elements routinely found on leaders - which are themselves highly individualistic (if anonymous) traces of those involved in processing and printing, projection and preservation. Appropriately enough, much of this text is illegible when viewed on screen. The text is bookended with a frame-by-frame hand-tracing of the entire Head and Foot of the actual Universal Leader. Sound design by Jackie Gallant.
The next two films in the series will address the Society Leader (1951) and the Academy Leader (1930/1947).
