CG CHARACTER CREATION – EMERGENT DESIGN PARADIGMS
DreamWorks Animation’s current and upcoming releases, Kung Fu Panda, and Monsters vs.
Aliens, are examples of the challenges facing animation fi lmmakers in the design and execution
of appealing, engaging and functional CG characters within the creatively and technically
complex CG animation pipeline.
Leading artists on each of these fi lms will deconstruct the process of designing and executing
the principal and subsidiary characters for these two very diff erent projects. They will reveal how
they maintained the integrity of their concept designs through modeling, rigging, animation
and fi nal stages of the production workfl ow, and off er insights into the future evolution of the
character design process.
Digital technologies are blurring the boundaries between the passive and active experience of visual art, entertainment, environmental design and the built environment.
