Winadu was founded in 1927 by camp pioneers, "Doc" Winnick, Mac Nadelson and Irv Dube (hence the name "Winadu.") They ran the camp until Shelley and Arleen Weiner purchased it in 1974. At that time, most boys' sleep-away camps focused on Indian lore and offered programs that gave equal time to arts & crafts, nature, woodworking and sports.
Winadu broke the mold! A greater emphasis was put on sports instruction, while maintaining the camp traditions and improving the other activity options. Winadu soon became known as the premier boys' sports camp in America. Our emphasis has always been on teaching boys values such as sportsmanship, teamwork and trying one's best. Winadu is unique in providing the top quality instruction of a specialty sports camp in the warm family environment of a traditional sleep-away camp.
