Velemir Dugina was born in Melbourne, Australia, on July 1st 1958 to an Anglo-Irish mother and a Rijekian father. He began studying violin at the age of six at the Ronjgov School of Music in Rijeka. He and his family moved to Trieste in 1968, where he continued his studies at the Giuseppe Tartini Conservatory. He played in the Teatro Verdi orchestra of Trieste and was among the first violins in the Ente Lìrico orchestra of the Arena of Verona. In addition to the classical scene, he actively devoted his time to popular music. Returning from a trip to Australia, where he had been to visit his mother, Velemir tragically put an end to his life in Rome, on January 16th 1987. He left a note in which he expressed his desire to be buried in Stivan on the Croatian island of Cres.
