This spring, Art and P.E. collaborated on an exciting ME Movement unit that involved light painting and fire dancing concepts. Students learned that dance shows us how repetition, movement, and balance can be captured visually and interpreted through art. Visual art, students discovered, can then help us understand how our bodies move. After learning a traditional Fire Dance in P.E. class, students studied still frames of the dance captured through the app Lightbomber. These still frames were compiled and altered using the computer graphics program Pixelmator. Students reflected on how the image changes through dance, and how we can change the image through technology.
Finally, students analyzed their own dance performances that they created. Using the medium of Art and reflecting upon the patterns they have produced with the dance, they learned how they could improve performance and create a greater perspective. Art concepts in this unit include repetition, pattern, movement, and balance, P.E. concepts in this unit include form, perspective, reflection, performance, and spatial awareness.
