In a joint project the experts of Fraunhofer IIS and the Audiovisual Media and Electronic Media department of the Stuttgart Media University HDM investigated the potential of lightfield technology by creating the movie "Coming Home". The breakdown demonstrates different steps in the processing chain.
Experts at Fraunhofer IIS are currently working on putting light-field processing into practice. A benefit for this new way of shooting is that the moviemaker can bring the creative possibilities of CGI post-production to live-action movie production. Therefor the scientists at Fraunhofer IIS are developing auto-calibration methods that can correct geometric distortions in the camera position, without calibration patterns or markers. Depth maps with high pixel density are calculated based on the scene. With a developed plug-in for The Foundry's NUKE users are enabled to process multi-camera data in post-production. Changes in sharpness, perspectives, 3D effects or camera movement in all spatial directions can so be realized based on a single camera shot.
The Stuttgart Media University HDM used this creative options and investigated the lightfield technology by applying the tools in the workflow chain. The clip and the breakdown
