Folias is a kinetic structure developed by Studio Zaha Hadid in the University of Applied Arts Vienna for its 15th anniversary. The project is part of the studio assignment “Kinetic Morphologies” on which the students worked for two semesters from September 2014 till June 2015. Divided in 5 groups the students developed designs of a large kinetic structures based on comprehensive studies over different biological phenomenon. After an internal competition within the studio, one design was chosen to be realised.
Folias is based on the biology research of the students Atanas Zhelev and Mariya Korolova and it was designed by the team of Zhelev and Korolova with Olivia Joikits and Junghwo Park. After the design was chosen for construction all 25 students of studio Hadid joint into one team to develop further and realise the project.
