Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is clearly a place of outstanding historic and architectural value, attracting people of all ages and backgrounds.
The reminders of the past, surrounded by the fully operating naval base, represent all this better than any other medium.
Our approach intends to strengthen the experience of the dockyard by opening and framing succeeding rooms of perception.Like a rag rug, elements and surfaces of different times and requirements are scattered on the site and on top of each other. Our concept is to overlay the whole site with a new, neutral layer, uniting old and new elements.
This new layer is a carpet of paving, composed of a mix of old and new material. It is spanning from north to south in the direction of the Meridian – as an allegory of what Portsmouth’s significance derives from.
To enrich the experience and the imagination the whole site is being overlaid with so-called Fragments, the artistic interpretation of the site.
