In Loving Memory of Paul Peter Skutshek
April 1, 1925 – June 19, 2015
Paul Peter Skutshek passed peacefully from this life to the next on Friday, June 19th, 2015, surrounded by his children and his daughter-in-law. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Desiree and her son, Noah; his son Paul Jr.(Gordon Palmer); and his son Edward (Denise) and their son, Jonathan, as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Canada, United States, Poland and Russia.
Paul was born on April 1, 1925 in Zhytomyr, Ukraine. He grew up in Horschtsckick, a small village in a German enclave, located about 200km from Kiev. He was the youngest of 12 children born to Maria & Joseph Skutshek. In 1943, Paul was granted German citizenship. He was drafted into the army and sent to war, captured at the Battle of the Bulge and put into a POW camp. After the war, Paul worked for the US Army, and then immigrated to Canada in 1951, and settled with his sister and parents in Winnipeg. In 1953, Paul married Eugenie Politz, the girl-next-door from Paul’s hometown. Their first child, Edward, came in 1956, Desiree followed in 1958, and Paul Jr. was born in 1963. During this time, Paul worked his way up with the CNR from shoveling coal to clerk in the CNR office. At night school, Paul studied architectural drafting, and then he began drawing plans and supervising the construction of homes for Dominion Lumber in Winnipeg. In 1968, the Skutshek family moved west to Kelowna, with a dream to start their own construction business. Paul worked on the construction and Eugenie learned bookkeeping to keep the family books. Paul designed and built hundreds of homes and several commercial buildings in and around Kelowna. He was active and served as President of HUDAC, a Kelowna builders association, and he was known for his honesty and integrity in business. Paul was a man of faith, and he & Eugenie were active in church activities. Paul’s family was his pride and joy and solace. Paul & Eugenie loved their children and they loved each other. When Eugenie died, Paul waited eagerly for their reunion in the Kingdom of God, with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit…forever.
Paul is predeceased by his parents and siblings. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Desiree and her son Noah; son Paul Jr. (Gordon Palmer), and son Edward (Denise) and their son Jonathan, together with numerous nieces and nephews in Canada, the US, France, Poland and Russia.
The Skutshek family wishes to express their deepest and sincerest gratitude to the staff of the Kelowna Hospice for the exemplary care that Paul received during his last days and to Dr. Michael Bobyn, his family physician, for the extraordinary care Paul received right up to the very end. A service celebrating Paul’s life will be held at Grace Lutheran Church on Saturday June 27th at 11:00 AM. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Central Okanagan Hospice Association.
