Hello and welcome to Tip #8 of the Generator Genius series. Today we will be talking about the importance of having your generator load bank tested.
Load bank testing is not required for compliance with all electrical codes, but it should be a requirement for all generator systems that you rely on. A stand-by generator may sit idle for months or maybe even years… How do you know that it will start up in an emergency?
The answer is you test it. First, you test to make sure it starts up and then you apply an electrical load and make sure it can support the load. Then you'll know if your generator will perform when you need it.
Imagine having your car parked in the garage and never taking it out for a drive. Would you be confident that the car would perform in an emergency? That is why a load bank test is so important. A Load Bank test puts a load on the generator and, using our car analogy, takes it on a test drive.
