Possibly due to climate change Oak Processionary has invaded the North of Europe. In 2010 it reached the most northern provinces of the Netherlands and a huge campaign was started to get rid of the caterpillar. Each caterpillar has 600.000+ hairs that cause itchiness, inflammation and respiratory problems when humans are exposed to them. In the forest the caterpilllar is contained by natural predators but on lane trees it can propagate into a real plague. The Oak Processionary can be exterminated by spraying BT, but that kills non target insects as wel. So the standard method is extracting the caterpillars with vacuum cleaners.
