As far as we know this is the first ever head-to-head test of flow rates of the full range of large bore intravenous access devices commonly used in the Emergency Department, and comparison of these with standard IV cannulas.
We used a Ranger rapid infusor (which delivers 300mmHg of pressure) to pump 1-litre of saline through of range of cannulas, and timed how long each one took.
The winner was the 8.5Fr Rapid Infuser Catheter (RIC) line made by Arrow, which only took 46 seconds to deliver a litre of saline. This 25% faster than the next fastest line.
