The 6th Dalai Lama Tsangyang Gyatso is arguably the most controversial Dalai Lama in history- he didn't observe religious rules, renounced his vows and left behind more than 60 passionate poems.
Making this documentary was difficult not only because it was shot in Tibet, but Tsangyang Gyatso has achieved such mythical status that it was difficult to isolate the facts from myths. Renditions of his poems and his story in popular culture further sensationalized Tsangyang Gyatso. I had to read his poems in different translations, and read studies from western, Tibetan and Chinese scholars, to get closer to the truth.
Hong Kong writer and poet Liu Wai-tong is the host for this episode, he wrote a book on Tsangyang Gyatso and was the perfect guide for our episode on Tibet.
