This Community Engagement Spotlight focuses on the Rap Club Anthology curated by Rachel Langlois and Scooter Hayes of the New Hanover County Public Library.
Rap Club was formed in the fall of 2012 at New Hanover County Public Library. Sessions are held monthly at each NHCPL location where children choose the beat, write the lyrics and record an original song on the spot. After each session, Youth Services Librarian Mr. Scooter, mixes the song and e-mails it participants.
On June 20th, Rap Club released their debut album: Hot! Fresh! Delicious! which features over 50 emcees under the age of twelve. This album was made possible thanks to funding provided by The Friends of New Hanover County Public Library and is now available to purchase from NHCPL and online at CD Baby.
Research has shown that children who are better rhymers are better readers. Rap Club gives children the opportunity to play with language and express themselves in a creative way as well as develop critical literacy skills such as phonological awareness, rhyming, grammar and writing.
As for their experience using the Creator tool to build this Anthology, the duo boasts they have "nothing but good things to say!" and "can't wait to get started on their next one!".
