In the spring, the flow of sweet sap begins again. A specialized group of woodpeckers, the sapsuckers, hammer small, rectangular wells into the bark and drink the sap. Many other species take advantage of these nutrient-rich wells, including insects, hummingbirds, and chipmunks. We just happened to opportunistically catch some of this on our Canon 7D.
