Finally, you Vimeo bods can see the finished video created to record the short lived pedestrian underpass between Granby Street and Leicester's Railway Station.
As the car and road cargo transport took over from buses, bicycles and trains, the city fathers accommodated these increasing numbers of vehicles by destroying huge swathes of the ancient city to provide sweeping motorways. To speed the traffic along the pedestrians were separated by forcing them underground to avoid lengthy pauses at pedestrian crossings across the roads.
Now 40 years later they have woken up to the folly of these actions because every road improvement just meant that more traffic found it convenient to enter the city, making traffic pollution a frightening reality.
This is a major sea change where city roads are made less convenient as a form of aversion therapy and making drivers consider alternatives to entering the city.
The subway is being filled in and a wide supercrossing with trees and wide pavements will form a new gateway into the city centre from those approaching it from London Road and the railway station.
The talented Bill Newsinger was approached to compose and play the music for this video making it my first video that is totally original material. Incidentally the mosaic patterns on the railway trucks were created by me in 1999. I couldn't have conceived then that I would be making a film about them all these years later....
