On a brilliant day in 1967, near Cumberland, MD, a group of R/C enthusiasts, led by Maynard Hill, found a beautiful mountain-top meadow from which to launch an attempt at setting a RC airplane altitude record later that year. While no record was achieved, the experience of flying from atop this scenic and beautiful place was so amazing that everyone wanted to return just to fly “for the fun of it.” Thus the Annual Cumberland “Soar for Fun was born.” Today CAMS hosts annual soaring events every spring, summer, and fall at its “HighPoint Aviation Airfield.”
Renowned for its unique combination of slope, ridge, and thermal soaring characteristics, and with constant upgrading (including a new “hangar”), HighPoint field is one of the premier soaring sites in the U.S.
