For years, Tenakee Springs resident Gordon Chew worked construction with his son Sterling. After crunching the numbers of importing second-rate wood from down south, Gordon decided to start supplying his construction business with local Tongass lumber. He and Sterling eventually started the Tenakee Logging Company, a sustainable sawmill that selectively logs a small amount of trees to turn into high value products. Today, the Tenakee Logging Company remains environmentally sustainable, and is the largest employer in town.
