A collaboration between city planner, urban designer, and author Jeff Speck (http://www.jeffspeck.com), and 3D artist Spencer Boomhower (http://www.cupolamedia.com), this series of videos describes some of the most common and most effective road-diet redesigns.
"Many streets of the type that were traditionally made 35 feet wide have been built 40 feet wide, with the extra space in the roadway encouraging drivers to speed. In many cases, the easiest way to make such a street safer is to stripe in a single bike lane, since a pair doesn't fit. Ideally, a nearby street can receive a single bike lane in the opposite direction, but this is not necessary."
