"Believe" delves into the lives of four New England families, each nurturing a child diagnosed with Dup15q syndrome—a condition arising from the duplication of chromosome 15q11.2-13.1. This syndrome brings forth a spectrum of challenges, including epileptic seizures, autism traits, and developmental hurdles.
My nephew, Justin, is the youngest among the subjects, with his mother, Jacqui, my best friend of four decades. Years ago, when Justin was newly diagnosed at a young age (he's now thirteen), Jacqui, in a moment of candid vulnerability, expressed, "I wish people could truly understand what it means to raise a child with special needs." This heartfelt sentiment fueled a desire to offer a glimpse into the daily lives of these remarkable families navigating Dup15q syndrome.
