“My Asshole is a Party” (“Meu Cu é uma Festa”) is a video performance created for the exhibition “Asshole’s Workers” (“Trabalhadores do Cu”), with the curatorship of Paulo Aureliano da Mata and Tales Frey, that took place in August 2015 in Porto, Portugal. I chose the asshole as a reference in the presentation and discussion of borderline questions. This work arises from the underlying necessity of exploring the asshole as a region and thematic of contemporary art, questioning the limits between art and pornography. The video focuses on presenting the asshole as an aesthetic object, almost elegant, in opposition to the presumed vulgarity of the act of “sucking a lollipop with one’s asshole”. In this work, I give continuation to the invention and presentation of opposites and contradictions. The asshole is the chosen thematic to explore the contradictions between vulgarity and elegance, fantasy and reality, what is allowed and forbidden, and what is visible and hidden. The performance constitutes of one single action and the title of the work, both combined state its focus: to evoke that body part which is still very much stigmatised and excluded from social circles; a part of the body where the most intimate sexual desires are materialised. In my view, the asshole is like a field, a space where such intimate desires emerge away from the eyes of the conservative society. The asshole remains hidden but when visible and adorned in red it reveals its sexual and symbolic power. To me, this video performance is a shout to the opening and acceptance of the asshole as a space for satisfaction of desires and pleasures without tabus.
