Woodstock, NY became a retreat for activist women at the turn of the 20th century. And a place for a retreat and a hospitable place to live for women artists and activists of all kinds.
Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a well-known suffrage activist, is one of those individuals with deep roots to the town and the supporting friendships that came with it. She retreated to Byrdcliffe to write as well as the Maverick colony in Woodstock.
