The Mississippi River has a detour route via Louisiana's Atchafalaya River. It's a braided, bayou'd, bottomlanded, cypressed corridor of southern wilderness, complete with untouched back channels, industrial remnants, hanging moss, fishing shacks, and a flora and fauna biodiversity to rival anywhere in North America. We paddled the length of it in a handmade canoe with river guide and conservation champion, John Ruskey and crew. This short film was made during that 10-day journey.
The Lower Mississippi River Foundation is working to conserve the country's mightiest river valley for future generations of river travelers and nature lovers. Rivergator is a mile-by-mile guide to the Lower Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers for non-motorized travelers.
