Radical Sensing is a body of work rooted in the sense of smell. Radical Sensing imagines a future in which people have chosen to replace their noses with a "super smelling" neuroprosthetic or a “post-nose”. The super smelling neuroprosthetic amplifies, isolates and records scent with hand gestures and customizations to your post-nose.
We chose smell as a place to study, to explore designing for the non-rational, intuitive and emotive aspects of brain computing. We spoke to experts in computational neurology, anaplastology and brain computer interface hardware. Additionally we collaborated with an independent perfumer.
While developing this body of work, we created a new methodology which we are calling "performative prototyping" that led us in a different direction than if we had taken a more conventional approach. Radical Sensing looks at neuroscience, physical computing and performance research to explore the potential of designing for a radical augmentation of smell and radical prosthetic.
