What does an artist mean to a community?
Art cannot die. It endures even beyond the passing of its creator. The messages in Prince's music now have a new meaning and these will be messages I will take with me for the rest of life. Why do we mourn artists after their passing? I think it's because we see, read and hear things in their work that are relevant to us or that we relate to. Prince's messages of love, peace and harmony (and also music!) resonate with all of us - or at least it should.
To me, Prince stood as the greatest pop musician of all time. He truly was the complete package and whether you liked him or his work or not, I think lots of people felt the same. He was immortal to his legion of fans and his passing seems unreal and just plain odd. You always expected him to be in his 70s still rocking out on a stage some place. What a loss.
A week after his passing, I traveled to Minneapolis from Bermuda to pay my respects. Having never been to Minneapolis, I did not know what I was getting into but I took a small DSLR that my dearly departed friend Dr. Neil Burnie gave me the last time I saw him and filmed my entire experience. What I found was a city mourning the loss of their "hometown hero". Prince belonged to them and they belonged to him. For someone who traveled the planet performing for millions of people, he was 100% local and loved his community of Chanhassen, Minneapolis and Minnesota.
I have produced a 19 minute documentary about the many Minneapolis/St. Paul residents I encountered (and from beyond) and their feelings after Prince had passed. I have always wondered if I was ever going to apply these video skills to something Prince related and unfortunately this is it.
This was a run-and-gun, guerrilla style shoot and I found out that my eyes need to get checked. Some of the interviews are slightly out of focus so please bear with it. Also, since this was run and gun, the audio is not the best when it comes to the interviews. I only used the internal mic and no shotgun mic.
Still though, I'm pretty pleased with the results. Hope you like it too. Drop me a line if you are so compelled: firstname.lastname@example.org
There's a nice surprise at the end.
