SuperAte Smut is an expanded cinema performance of 1960s and 70s X-rated smut on 8mm film. Incorporating a very hands-on performance with twin 8mm projection, SuperAte Smut examines the cinematic penetration of light and celluloid.
The performance consists of five untitled silent films in both black and white and colour. A live soundtrack is produced via the twin 8mm projector system and a stereo sound recorder feeding the mechanised soundscape back into the space and the sound itself.
The destructive nature of the manipulated film induces a violent passionate interaction between light and celluloid. The silent images stott, are chewed up, burn amd melt before moving on to where a similar process occurs climaxing in hundreds of feet of film strewn across the floor and projection desk.
The amalgamation of the internal workings of cinema itself (projector, projectionist and live sound) and the content on screen sees Open Night Cinema exist as a heated, heavy breathing cinematic body unable to resist it's destructive violent sexual urges.
