Curated by Swiss architects Herzog & De Meuron and Ai Weiwei, Ordos 100 is a construction project
located in an inner Mongolian community.
The project had 100 architects from 27 countries. Each architect would design a 1000 square meter villa
for the community, fitting a bigger, master plan designed by Ai Weiwei.
The film documents three site visits to Ordos, marking January 25, 2008 as the first one. The master plan
and design of each individual villa are completed, though the project remains unfinished.
So why weren’t the villa built? Containing huge coal deposits, the Ordos area is an arid area, where
development seems to be happening. But as in the past, Ai Weiwei’s relationship with the Chinese
government is strained, at best.
How should we view this ambitious project? Perhaps as an idea with the best intentions…but even our
well-thought out dreams can be crushed due to unfortunate circumstances.
