In 2010, Hemayel Martina (1990-2011) launched his first collection of poetry entitled "Ansestro Preokupa Sosega / Worried Ancestor Rest in Peace". The 39 pieces are creative conversations between Hemayel and the ancestors, who were key figures in the community of Curacao. The present piece, which carries the same title as the book, describes the collective purpose of the poems and forms an urgent invitation, calling out to the citizens of Curacao to break free from the past and manifest their identity as they shape every new moment.
In 2011, Hemayel passed away as a result of injuries caused by a car accident. Hemayel's family considered him the 40th ancestor and Curacao embraced him as an important poet and activist. Aruban writer Rosabelle Illes met Hemayel while studying at the same school, Webster University, in the Netherlands. The two quickly became friends based on their shared passion for poetry and the Caribbean. Rosabelle joined Hemayel in launching his book in October 2010 on the island of Curacao. She recited part of this piece at the event but learned the entire poem by heart. Ever since Hemayel passed away she felt a need to continue sharing his work as it is so vital for the island of Curacao. With the permission of Hemayel's parents and with the help of multidisciplinary artist Crisen Schorea and Hemayel's friend, musician Levi Silvanie, Rosabelle shares this piece not only as a homage to Hemayel but as a gift to her neighboring island of Curacao.
