The Freedom Awards are a hardcore anti-slavery program in dress up clothes. Yep - these awards actually save lives as modern day Harriet Tubmans and Frederick Douglass’ are honored. The high profile recognition helps them raise 10x the money for their frontline programs that free people from slavery.
Free the Slaves and Voices4Freedom co-founder, Peggy Callahan created and executive produced the project at Free the Slaves. This short Free the Slaves video highlights the awards from 2008-2010. Voices4Freedom will build on this great tradition as we invest in the best work around the world and share promising practices that work on the ground.
The awards not only save lives and support the best frontline work they also educate millions of people in an inspiring and hopeful way about modern day slavery. Previous awards were covered by more than 350 media outlets and were viewed by more than 80-million people in west Africa alone.
Some of the winners, presenters and performers include Archbishop Tutu, singer Jason Mraz, author Isabel Allende, education expert Sir Ken Robinson, The Agape International choir, actors Forrest Whitaker, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher who honored activists from Ghana, India, Brazil, Cambodia, Pakistan, the United States, Uganda, the Philippines and more.
