Hello, I’m Edwin, and I’m a recovering manager. At our company, we’ve decided to become self-managing. How does that work? It works smoothly because we have one golden rule: anyone can make any decision provided they follow the advice process. Anytime you’re making a decision that affects anyone or there’s a subject matter expert, you need to get their advice. The bigger the decision, the more advice you need to get. You don’t have to follow all of the advice, you just have to gather it and use it to inform your decision. What we’ve found is that this makes better, faster decisions - and best of all, people get really engaged. This might be the secret to engagement!
What would the world look like if the current engagement stats were flipped? Employee engagement has the potential to literally turn the world around and make it a better place.
I say let’s get rid of managers. Now, I can only get things done if people want to get them done with me. And I’m getting feedback in the process that I never would have gotten if I were the boss. We have the opportunity to move from an organization where the manager is the parent and the employee is the child, and where the organization doesn’t trust their employees, to a situation where we believe employees are trustworthy, and creative, and capable. We can move from the situation where we’re a machine, and people are resources, to a situation where it’s an ecosystem, it’s a city, people do what they want to do, and they’re more successful.
All we have to do is cut the string, and get rid of managers.
