'the story of Shallim and his old rickshaw'
Running barefoot between the wooden shafts for half a lifetime. What he wanted to carry in his rickshaw, actually, was his family. The World’s first feature length documentary shot with Canon’s DSLR 5D Mark II
< Synopsis >
In Calcutta, twenty thousand feet are running tangled up, all barefoot. They are rickshaw pullers, slowly disappearing out of the city’s landscape.
Among them are Manoj, a languid young man, Mohammed, a lovely trickster who more often fails than succeeds, and Husein the street sage who knows all about the city. And then there's Shallim; an ordinary man, a husband of a wife, and a father of a son. For Shallim an old and tired rickshaw has been the only means of hope. He runs endless miles with it to save up money to buy an auto rickshaw that will realize his dream: A house for his family. However, despair comes to the weakest first. Shallim’s wife is found to be seriously ill. His son catches swine flu while working at a factory. Hospital charges are mounting and Shallim’s dream is on the verge of collapsing. Feeling dejected, he sheds tears.the tears of fathers.
As the shadow of despair creeps over Shallim, the trauma of Manoj; father’s death is revealed. Is there any hope left for barefoot Calcutta?
< Characters >
Shallim (55 years old)
The protagonist of this film. He’s been pulling a rickshaw in Sudder Street, Calcutta for more than half of his lifetime. Hands deeply wrinkled, his feet cracked and callused, he is a hard working man with a big family to support. Shallim’s only dream is to buy an auto rickshaw, earn more money and buy a proper house for his family. However, life’s ordeal keeps hounding him. With his wife falling into serious illness, his son gets sick too and his dream seems to be fading away. Will Shallim find his way through the hardest battlefield of life?
Manoj (20 years old)
A languid young man just arrived in the city of joy and starting to pull a rickshaw in Sudder Street. Being the youngest among rickshaw pullers, everyone treats him like their son but he doesn’t open his heart to them. In the end, his trauma about his father is revealed.
< Director’s Note >
How many of you have sat on a rickshaw that your friend pulls- it never feels easy.
It is just how a rickshaw puller makes a living. But understanding the fact doesn’t help you feel better. Sitting in a rickshaw, you see the old and tired back of your friend just as his worn out rickshaw. A young man Shallim was running barefoot in Calcutta city when I met him 10 years ago. Now a father of many children, he still pulls the same rickshaw in the same street.
It is neither fair to say that rickshaw pullers are happy though poor, nor sad because poor. It is just that tears fill my eyes when looking at the trace of resignation engraved on the back of rickshaw pullers. What I see in them is an old train running through the battlefield of life.
My Barefoot Friend is a story of all the fathers in our time who live with pains and scars but keep dreaming. It is about all the people who have never given up, would never give up and will never give up sacrificing for their family. I wanted to make a sincere film for my friend running barefoot for his family, for all the fathers carrying the weight of life and for those who watch it and think of their father.
