Professor Ron Johnston, an expert on electoral and political geography, will discuss the coalition Government’s proposals for reducing the size of the House of Commons and equalising its constituencies. On 5 July, Deputy PM Nick Clegg announced in a statement to the House of Commons that the Government would introduce a Bill to create fewer and more equally sized constituencies. The aim is to reduce the number of MPs from 650 to 600, thereby saving approximately £12 million a year on pay, pensions and allowances.
