WHY ADVISORY? is one of six videos produced about advisory in schools. The idea behind advisory is to provide a time and place for students to gather in a group with an advisor to discuss personal, academic, and social issues. Unlike traditional subjects, advisory is a "non-academic" time for students to grow together, share, and develop a more comfortable educational atmosphere. Advisors use this special time to advise students on academics by evaluating thier weekly/monthly grades and suggest ways for student improvement.
Postsecondary planning is also a big part of advisory, as are rituals and routines. Advisors use gatherings and closings for group cohesion, and improve their skills in both facilitating and debriefing student groups.
This video series was created by Cally Wolk of MediaPalette on behalf of Educators for Social Responsibility and the Austin Independent School District. The material is not for sale, but rather is being provided as a resource for schools to help them implement advisory across the country.
