Date: July 4, 2015; Medium: Super 8 film and HD video; Inspired by the idea of a score in the form of a disguised language traveling freely and unbound by governing law, Helga Fassonaki interpreted her score ‘8 Pillars’, originally one of sixteen scores created in Iran and sent to female artists abroad to perform publicly in lieu of her ability to do so. The cameraperson, whose motion and view is revealed through another camera frame, paints a composition created but never finished. ‘8 Pillars – A Free Score’ explores two sides of freedom – personal versus political, whilst stripping content from song until the sacredness of a singular voice is revealed.
