This vignette was produced as part of my teaching documentary filmmaking at Calvin College in the Spoelhof Chair for a visiting professor in 2003. Students in class were involved in this and other productions portraying the life of different ethnic communities in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and the life, work and calling of graduates of the college. In this portrait of Jobe’s barber shop and beauty salon, students helped in preproduction fieldwork and in production, though most footage (except our interviews) was shot by me. Students took this and footage from a range of subjects we worked on either altogether or separately, and went on to complete their own projects for the course. Editing for this piece was done in the context of the class by Karen Kleinheksel, a professional editor working with my direction to shape it.
