Unlike many “legacy church” stories, Clayton UMC was not in imminent danger of closing. Yet, they wanted their legacy to be one of life, not death. Their decision to close years before circumstances demanded they do so allowed them to gift The Gathering approximately $250,000, a building and a desire to see something new take root. According to their pastor at the time, Linda Gastreich, “they also gave the gift of letting go. …as the transfer took place, but they agreed to turn over the keys and let people they didn't know begin to make decisions about a place they had cared for and claimed as their own for many years.” Today, the Clayton site is the second of four sites for The Gathering.
