Culture as Commons? Designing with Digital Heritage ( Helsinki Design Week 2015 )
Commons is the cultural and natural resources that are held in common and managed collectively. The internet and changing social practices continue to challenge the ways we use cultural content and the principles of cultural production. This means we urgently need to rethink the ways to use our common cultural heritage for creating something new.
Finna.fi provides free access to material from Finnish museums, libraries and archives. Related to Helsinki Design Week 2015 theme Time Machine, Finna.fi will explore what our cultural heritage could mean in 2015 and what might happen if it would be commonly held and openly usable for everyone.
The designers involved were challenged to create a new idea, work of art or concept over the course of a single day. All the creations were presented during the Helsinki Design Week 2015 at the main venue L3 Makasiini.
