Taster for the documentary feature, I Am Belmaya, currently in production. Headstrong Nepali orphan Belmaya has endured a lifetime of abuse and discrimination. When she was 14, living in a home, I taught her documentary photography. Through the viewfinder she glimpsed a better life. But after I left, we were unable to have contact.
In 2014 we were reunited. Belmaya, 21, is living in a windowless room with her oppressive husband and baby daughter. She has given up on finding happiness. But her life is about to change, as she embarks on a documentary filmmaking training. As she takes charge of the camera, she finds her voice and confronts her husband and her past. Through making her own short documentary, she finally takes control of her own story.
