Empowering Women and Giving Back in Cabarete
The 2nd Annual Butterfly Effect Dominican Republic closes the 2010 BE World Tour with great success.
Cabarete, Dominican Republic August 12, 2010. The Amber Dune Butterfly Effect Dominican Republic landed in Cabarete on August 6-7, 2010. This year’s event doubled in size hosting 55 participants from all over the world. Local and visiting women gathered on the beach of Cabarete and completed a 4km downwind ride from Cabarete Bay to Playa Encuentro. The women participated in windsurfing, kite surfing, stand-up paddling, and kayaking. The event included a beach cleanup, safety and stretching sessions, as well as food and gear from local sponsors. All of Cabarete and many from Santiago and Santo Domingo came out to pack the house at the Nikki Beach Cabarete after party. A raffle and silent auction was held and the Butterfly Effect Dominican Republic surpassed last year’s efforts 10 fold raising $2500.00 USD for The DREAM Project.
The beach cleanup resulted in 40 bags of garbage being picked up off the beach in Cabarete proving that this event is positively impacting our small surf community and preserving our natural playground. This environmental focus included, the participants, children from the DREAM Project, and members of the community.
“DREAM is especially honored to be part of this great community and global effort to empower women through sport. Many of DREAM’s programs are centered around leveling the playing field for girls and young women in school and life. We believe that the Butterfly Effect is a perfect reflection of those efforts.” Jonathan Wunderlich, Director of Development for DREAM project.
The Dominican Republic Education And Mentoring (DREAM) Project is a US 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides quality education for all children born into poverty in rural areas and small communities of the Dominican Republic.
“Closing the Butterfly Effect World Tour 2010 in the Dominican Republic has been the perfect end to an incredible year of events. The local and visiting women in Cabarete came out strong with a lot of energy and determination both in their athletics and support for the community. The Cabarete event has exceeded all expectations and has raised the bar for all future world tours. “ Tatiana Howard, founder, The Butterfly Effect.
