An author for youth packs her belongings into storage to afford to set out on a book tour to empower youth on the fringe and redefine at-risk in America.
Putting her belongings into storage and renting a Ford Focus, a YA author sets out on an unprecedented, self-funded book tour across America. Rather than simply signing books, she holds writing workshops and discussions with at-risk youth at no cost to their programs for several months. From libraries, alternative education, juvie hall homeless shelter and tradition schools, Charlton-Trujillo takes risks on herself and the young people she meets. Asking hard questions about such topics as: bullying, belonging, self-image, suicide and teen pregnancy, she empowers youth through writing everywhere she goes. Also, featuring some of the most prominent authors for young people in America, At-Risk Summer is a film that proves showing up has currency. That no kid should ever be counted out!
