Mustang - Back to Nepal (english version)

Mustang - Back to Nepal (english version)

Tonio Nicolazzi

On April 25 2015, a violent 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook Nepal. A second earthquake of 7.3 magnitude struck on May 12. The death toll is 8700 ; the number of injured casualties reaches 22 000.

One month later, Anthony Nicolazzi, editor in chief of Trek Magazine, discovers Kathmandu, fort the first time after the earthquake.

« Despite the destruction, life has regained its rhythm and the Nepalese people have shown incredible solidarity. After much thought, the team led by the French guide Paulo Grobel, decided to respect its engagement towards the local teams and continue their journey to Mustang, a region in North-West Nepal, largely spared by the earthquake.

During three weeks in Mustang, we did not come across any tourists. Mustang is almost intact, like three quarters of the country. Local Nepalese teams have not had any work in 2015. Trekking professionals do not expect trekking to regain momentum before Autumn 2016, even though routes such as the Everest Base Camp, the Annapurna Circuit or Mustang are perfectly operational.

Let's not abandon the Nepalese people.

Let's go back to Nepal. »
