Fitzpatrick’s Temperance Bar in Rawtenstall Lancashire, is the last bar of its kind in the UK, selling a range of herbal brews which includes Sarsaparilla, Dandelion & Burdock and Cream Soda. Established in 1890, it was once part of a chain of 28 Temperance bars across Lancashire run by the Fitzpatrick family from Ireland, part of a much wider network of such bars in the region.
Since the year 2000 it has been owned by Chris Law who continues to brew and sell herbal beverages made to the original recipes handed down to him by the Fitzpatrick family.
This traditional establishment has a loyal following and draws in customers of all ages, from the very young to the very old. Cheerful local resident Eva Whitworth, a youthful 90 year old, recalls visiting the place as a young nurse, 70 years ago, when she would visit the bar seeking herbal remedies for common ailments. Today she comes to enjoy a refreshing tonic and some good company, and entertains her fellow customers with a few songs from the old times.
