Joel passed into the arms of Jesus, his Savior on October 16, 2015 at Okanagan Hospice House in Kelowna, B.C. He passed away peacefully with “the love of his life” Marion, by his side. He was 88. Joel was born on May 6, 1927 in Eriksdale, Manitoba, the third child of Jonas and Gerda Solmonson. He was predeceased by his parents his brother Alrik, and a sister Anna Wilkinson. He is survived by his beloved friend Marion Mainville, three sisters, Sarah Gaetz (Ken) of Kelowna, Viola Wilson (David) of Winnipeg, and Edith Benson (Harvey) of Kelowna. Also many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and extended family.
Joel worked in the printing trade for many years. His first employment was with the Fort Frances Times and later with a newspaper in Atikokan, Ontario. The family relocated to Winnipeg in 1943 where Joel became a type-setter for a Swedish newspaper and also the Winnipeg Tribune.
In 1990, Joel set his sights on Kelowna where he enjoyed 25 years of life in the sun in the Okanagan. Grace Lutheran Church was where he worshipped and was a faithful member of that congregation. Joel was a kind and gentle man, hardworking and generous in giving to those in need. The family would like to say a big “Thank you” to the wonderful, dedicated staff at the Hospice House for caring for our beloved brother during his last days. Thanks also to Rev. Ed. Skutshek, his beloved pastor for the last 15 years, and Dr. Bernard Lewke for his special care of Joel for 25 years. May our Lord bless each one. A memorial service celebrating Joel’s life, was held at Grace Lutheran Church, 1162 Hudson Road, West Kelowna B.C. on Friday, October 23rd at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church in Joel’s memory. Arrangements entrusted to Everden Rust, condolences may be offered at everdenrust.com
