Emeryville is a burial ground associated with the Ohlone Indians, some of the earliest residents of the San Francisco Bay Area The grounds were used from 500BC to 1700AD. In 1876 it was partially flattened for an amusement park. An industrial plant was built on the site at the turn of the century. Effigies and drftwood sculptures began appearing on the mudflats in the 1960s.The state claimed these were damaging the ecology and threatening wildlife and removed them in the late 1980s. In the 1990s the area was fenced off and cleared to become the Eastshore State Park. The adjacent site was developed into the Bay Street Mall.
