The Darmstadt Jazzforum is an international conference taking place every other year since 1989 and focuses on different topics in each edition. It is a unique mix featuring an international conference, concerts, workshops and exhibitions. Each Jazzforum has been documented in our book series of thirteen volumes up-to-now which focuses on jazz scholarship and documentation. With the Darmstadt Jazzforum we hope to contribute to a discourse which is and remains important in our changing modern world.
The 14th Darmstadt Jazzforum took place 1 – 4 October 2015 and focussed on Gender and Identity in Jazz. Researchers, journalists and musicians looked at different views on this complex field of topics. They discussed topics such as masculinity / gender / intersectionality / identity, and they presented analytical case studies, in which the art of specific musicians was being approached without first looking at the gender aspect of their music.
Aditionally, an exhibition at he gallery of the Jazzinstitut Darmstadt, entitled 'Spontaneous_Genuine_Female', documented four lives and artistic approaches far from the usual clichés of “female jazz” – an inviting trip to different scenes of the jazz world shown on photos, in films, covers and posters.
Stephanie Wagner, Gina Schwarz and Esther Baechlin gave a three-day workshop for young jazz musicians at the music school WAGGONG in Frankfurt.
The bands Playground, Jürgen Wuchner Quartett and Tenors of Kalma gave concerts at Jazzinstitut's venue, the Bessunger Knabenschule and at the Romanfabrik Frankfurt.
The 15th Darmstadt Jazzforum will presumably take place in October 2017.
