Bassam Tibi, author of "Islam’s Predicament with Modernity," argues that cultural tensions—if not dealt with and tamed—can escalate and lead to political conflict. In this lunchtime meeting, he discusses how disagreements over value systems between Islam and the West are not a “clash of civilizations,” but can be resolved through intra-civilizational dialogue. Tibi also critically distinguishes “Islamism” from Islam, arguing that there is a war of ideas between Islamism and the vision of democratic peace.
