A few years back I became interested in a vast archive of home movies my family has collected over the years and began to transfer the material (mostly 16mm and Super 8 reversal) into digital format, first and foremost to not lose them before they deteriorated.
When I realized that both of my grandfathers (in the 1930s) where already making home movies before WWII I was deeply drawn into a past that would directly connect to the present and me - through the ages and via my parents.
Initially I put together a few short pieces from the vast archive (over 12 hrs total - ranging from 1930s to late 1980s.) just to share with the family at certain events.
The Volume was created for my Father's 80th Birthday Celebration and it solely focuses on his childhood in the 1930s. The young boy is my father and the couple in their 40s that can be seen throughout are my grandparents.
Eventually, within the next few years I hope to create a longer form film for general audiences from this material.
The editor I worked with on these piece was the brilliant Grete Jentzen, Berlin.
