It was around 11pm when Yufeng and I decided to rehearse this piece that she composed many weeks ago for our collaboration in Tainan Festival.
3 days before our arrival in Taiwan, I received a demo of her song and an email that said "If you don't like to, it's ok. But i would love to play this song with you."
After listening to it, I was instantly excited. I didn't know exactly what to do with the song as it had many corners and very few space to sing in. But just like her, I wanted to play. So I emailed her back and said "Let's do it".
6 days after arriving in Taiwan, we finally got the chance to set a schedule for rehearsals. Yufeng also invited Sandy Baliong and Tim Cada to join the collaboration. In my hotel room, there we jammed. For the first time. I was in bliss.
Hometown is about a place where Yufeng was born. A place where it was always raining and was very gloomy. Despite the gloomy condition, she misses it and remembers the wonderful adventure she had there growing up. She plays the Pipa, a traditional Chinese instrument, where she expresses her love for her Hometown.
I on the other hand played with Sanskrit words "Om Hari Om" that can also be translated in English as "Home Hurry Home, then adding few lines of Tagalog "Isa dalawa tatlo, babalik sayo, pagmulat mo, sasalubong ay ako".
I am blessed to have shared this night with you, Susie (Yufeng). Thank you for your music.
