HARMONIC BRIDGE, a site specific installation by O+A, has been transforming traffic noise into harmony since 1998, the year before MASSMoCA opened their amazing museum in the ruins of the Sprague Electric Company and forever changed the flavor and economy of North Adams Massachusets. Two 16 foot "tuning tubes" generate overtone series in the key of "C" in response to traffic sounds on HIghway 2 overpass, and this real-time harmonic content is then played back from two cement "Cube" loudspeakers (designed by O+A) beneath the bridge.
Over time, this uninviting piece of lost city architecture began to speak like found "gothic" acoustic space, filled with real-time urban harmonies. Seventeen years later, the cement "Cubes" have been polished by constant usage, and the area under the bridge has become a hangout spot, a destination, and in the near future a park. The piece was comissioned by the Earmarks festival, Technical direction by Bill Ballou. An excellent restoration of the piece was undertaken by MASSMoCA in 2013.
